NEWS FOR 2020 KOENIGSEGG REGERA

Overview

Constantly on the cutting edge of go-fast technology, Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg has proven why it deserves its place in the world of exotic cars. Taking hybrid technology to new performance heights is no easy feat, but that’s what the Koenigsegg Regera— Regera means “to reign” in Swedish—has been doing since its 2016 introduction. The Regera’s hyper-powerful hybrid powertrain isn’t its only party piece; its interior is luxurious and full of high-end features you wouldn’t expect from a car that’s this blindingly quick. Unfortunately, the 80-car production run has been long sold out, meaning potential buyers who can afford cars with million-dollar price tags are left cruising the used-hypercar market. Pity.

What’s New for 2020?

The Regera has been in production since 2016 and receives no changes for the 2020 model year.

If you’re looking to buy a brand-new Koenigsegg Regera, you are a few years too late, since all 80 are spoken for. If you’ve got enough money, buying one of these supercars second hand is your only option. If your pockets aren’t deep enough, a wall poster might be your only alternative.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Koenigsegg Regera has one of the most exotic powertrains of any car in the world: a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V-8 mounted behind the passenger compartment working in concert with three electric motors. The total system output is 1500 horsepower. There is no transmission; the Regera utilizes a system called Koenigsegg Direct Drive, which sends all power from the electric motors and gas-powered engine to the rear wheels. The Regera is constructed almost entirely out of carbon fiber and Kevlar, just like all Koenigseggs, and tips the scales at 3500 pounds, which gives it an incredible weight-to-power ratio. It can go from zero-249 mph-zero in just 31.49 seconds, which currently stands as a world record. Keeping the car stable at such high speeds is a task managed by active aerodynamic components and an adjustable suspension system.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA hasn’t tested the Regera’s fuel economy and we haven’t put one through our 200-mile highway fuel economy test, so we don’t know how sparingly or excessively it sips gas. It’s worth noting that Koenigsegg claims that the Regera’s hybrid powertrain set up is extremely efficient, so we’ll have to take them at their word. If you’re looking for a hybrid with superb fuel economy, a Toyota Prius or Honda Insight would be an infinitely better choice. Just like the Porsche 918, McLaren P1, and Ferrari LaFerrari hypercars, the Regera’s hybrid system is intended to add performance, not improve fuel economy.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Koenigsegg Regera is a car that is luxurious as well as insanely fast. There’s little compromise in creature comfort. The interior is dressed in supple leather, the seats are power adjustable, and there’s a touchscreen infotainment system that operates intuitively. The cabin is well isolated from engine vibration. Regeras also feature a cool technology called Autoskin, which allows the doors, hood, and front trunk (or frunk) to power themselves open and closed remotely using the cars hydraulic system. Autoskin is controlled via the key fob. The Regera’s frunk is large enough to accommodate the removable hardtop, but don’t expect to put anything else in there when the top is stowed away.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Regera comes with some of the niceties you’d expect in a high-end sedan but might accept not having in a hypercar from a low-volume manufacturer. The Regera is equipped with an on-board Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, and satellite navigation, which are controlled through a 9.0-inch infotainment system. For those drivers that like to record their driving, the Regera also has front, rear, and inner cameras. To ensure that each customer’s car is up to date on the technology front, Koenigsegg also equipped the Regera with the capability to remotely run vehicle diagnostics and update software.

Safety and Driver Assistance Features

The Regera is lacking in safety and driver assistance features. It has only front and rear parking sensors. The entire car is constructed of super strong carbon fiber and Kevlar, which means that, in the event of a crash, the Regera should be able to take the blow and protect its occupants. There are no crash-test results from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to confirm its structural integrity, however. Those two organizations do not routinely test cars that are sold in such small numbers as the Regera.
